Remain Humble!
Last night I came across the story of Naaman in the Bible (found in 2 Kings Chapter 5) and my mind instantly said 'Humble Yourself!'
A synopsis of the story is Naaman was a great Captain. He was struck with leprosy. His wife's servant girl lead him to the prophet Elisha who could heal him. Elisha told him to dip in a dirty river 7 times. At first Naaman refused because who would want to bathe in a dirty river? It's embarrassing and revolting. In the end he followed the instruction and was healed.
Sometimes we believe that we are too good for something because of our position in life and that certain things are below us when we really have to remember we are all humans no matter our status. No matter how much we earn. No matter what clothes we wear. We are all equal so looking down on something or somebody is just arrogance. God created us and still sees us as equal.
People often forget what they have can be taken from them in a heartbeat. People believe once they've reached a certain rung on the so called ladder of life, that they are invincible. Naaman himself was a man with power yet he was struck with leprosy.
Another thing I got from the story is often times we ask God for answers, He gives us one and we say no. Naaman's servants said in 2 Kings 5:13 (MSG Version) :
'... “Father, if the prophet had asked you to do something hard and heroic, wouldn’t you have done it? So why not this simple ‘wash and be clean’?”'
In essence what they were saying is you would do something much harder than this as long as it made you look good but this simple act you cannot do? If I'm honest I wouldn't have wanted to dip in the dirty river myself. We ask God to do these big things for us, things we ourselves would find complicated but when He gives us simple tasks to do we are suddenly complaining and refusing.
For example, I always pray to have my own show one day and that God gives me the confidence to take the steps to get there. Yet when people approach me and ask me to sing in church, without even thinking my immediate answer is 'no' because I'm shy. When I deep it I'm actually very silly because I'm trying to be confident and God is giving me opportunities to become confident but I'm refusing because it's not the way I want it to go. Me refusing and avoiding God's calls is why my life is stagnant in some areas. Same goes for many of you. We pray for things and attributes thinking when we wake up we will be transformed. Truth is we have to take action and move in faith.
1 Peter 5:6 (KJV) says:
'Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time'
If we come to God as His humble servants and follow his instructions in faith we will surely reap our rewards and receive the answers to our prayers (even if it's not the answer we're looking for) all in 'due time'!
